5 Weeks Left!

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Talked to Ken today and he guesstimates 5 weeks left before the body work is done. Goes for priming next week and he said he would send some pics along then once that is done. After that is done the body gets painted, then reassembled, glass installed, etc. I am starting to get excited!

In other news, the wheels arrived from iForged and they look great. I have been doing miscellaneous prep work, like installing the air ducts into the dash pieces,  prepping the wiper motor, and sending the rest of the visible aluminum pieces off for powdercoating.

Updates, or Lack thereof…

Wednesday, July 15th, 2009

Just thought I would let everyone know what is going on with the car.

The GTM is still at Ken’s waiting to be started. I guess he was busier than I expected. Start date was supposed to be a few weeks ago, but Ken assures me it will be ‘very soon’.

Wheels from Iforged came today. I would post pics but they did the wheels wrong (polished lips instead of black like I paid for), so I have to have them pick them up and wait another 2 months probably for them to send back the right wheels. This pretty much goes hand-in-hand with what this project has entailed. I have counted no less than 20 instances of shippers sending the wrong parts, missing bolts, messing up the order complete, etc, during the duration of this project.

Footbox Cover Installed, Alignment and Shipping Dates Scheduled

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Tonight I cleaned up some misc. wiring in the footbox (like moving the wiper harness so it will be more easily accessible after the footbox cover is installed) and installed the footbox cover. This is one of the last things I need to do on the car before I have it shipped out for body work.

Friday the car gets aligned, Saturday or Sunday it ships out for a 2-3month visit with Ken (StreetRodPainter). He has done hundreds of cobra replicas and a handful of other GTMs so I know the car is in good hands and will return in great shape.

The to-do list before shipping the car out is pretty small:
– Make sure all wiring under the fuse box is secured
– Install the last two underbody panels and skid bars
– Alignment
– Put the body back on, tape the doors on, tape the hatch and hood on
– Pack up all the goodies (door hardware, windows, headlight buckets, etc) that Ken needs

First Start To-Do List, Revision 2

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

Thought I would post an updated to-do list of things to do before the first start:

– Connect fuel filter output to fuel rail
– Install passenger fuel tank and tunnel aluminum that precedes it
– Connect cable shift to trans (awaiting the adapter piece)
– Mount transmission oil cooler and pump and run its hosing and wiring
– Wire up VSS
– Extend Starter wires
– Run AC belt
– Reinstall modified clutch pedal

– Bleed brakes and clutch
– Oil trans and engine
– Fill coolant
– Charge AC

Clutch Lines and Slave, Coolant Hosing Clamps, Serpentine, Rambling

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

Tonight the clutch line was plumbed/finished and attached to the clutch slave. I need to get some nuts to mount the slave to the trans still.

The coolant hosing is now all secured. I replaced the last corrugated hose clamps with the heavy-duty ones I am using and doubled up the extra clamps around the hardlines.

The serpentine belt now fits perfectly. It did not fit previously due to the ‘wrong’ balancer I had on.

Some random issues that need to be resolved:
– Figuring out how to connect the fuel rail to the fuel filter output is still in the works, but Josh and I have a plan.
– I need to figure out a better way to protect a segment of the main wiring loom from header heat (it sits about 1-1.5″ away). The portion of the heatshield I made out of 2″ loom touched the headers there so I removed that portion.
– The rear window aluminum piece will interfere with the intake manifold…probably going to have to cut a pocket out for it.

Closing in on First Drive – the To Do List

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

With the first startup and hopefully go-kart drive approaching, I have compiled a list of things that need to be done before that exciting day. It’s quite a list, but mostly lots of little things that will get checked off quickly. Hopefully first start within a week or two!

– Fuel Lines – fuel rail crossover + fuel filter output to rail
– Install 45-degree fittings into water pump and reinstall water pump
– Install balancer (currently being honed, should arrive Friday)
– Install Passenger fuel tank and connect its lines
– Connect coolant hoses
– Install clutch, flywheel, and transmission
– Install axles
– Route clutch line to slave
– Connect cable shift to trans
– Mount transmission oil cooler and pump and connect to trans
– Install VSS
– Run serp and accessory belts
– Paint and Reinstall modified clutch pedal
– Bleed brakes and clutch
– Oil for engine and trans
– Fill coolant system
– Charge AC

ATI Balancer Update, Rambling

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

ATI packaged the wrong bolts with the damper and ac pulley I purchased so Josh and I are indeed still sane. New bolts will arrive early next week, along with an install tool. In the meantime, the balancer will be honed to spec while I wait.

I am making a ‘to do’ list of things that need to be done before the car can be shipped out for final body fitment and paint, etc, which I will probably post later.

First Sighting

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

I was browsing the GTM forum and someone who just received one of their kits from Factory Five noted there were two others in the truck. The poster was nice enough to snap a pic of mine. You can’t see much, but I’m glad to hear it is almost here!
